Detailing prices vary more than almost any other automotive service, and it makes people suspicious. Two shops quote the same vehicle and the numbers can differ by hundreds of dollars.
There are real reasons for that. Here is what actually drives the price, so you can tell the difference between a fair quote and one that is either padded or hiding something.

Detailing is priced by labor, and labor depends almost entirely on condition. That is the whole explanation for most of the spread.
A two-year-old car that gets washed regularly and has never carried a pet might need three hours. A five-year-old family vehicle with kids, a dog, spilled drinks, and no interior cleaning since purchase might need eight. Same service on paper, wildly different job.
This is why any shop quoting a firm price sight unseen is guessing. A reputable one will either ask detailed questions or look at the vehicle first.
Vehicle size. A three-row SUV has substantially more glass, carpet, and painted surface than a sedan. It is not a small difference.
Condition. The single biggest factor. Heavily soiled interiors, embedded pet hair, and neglected paint all multiply labor hours.
Interior versus exterior versus both. Most shops price these separately because they are genuinely different work.
Paint correction stages. A one-step correction is a fraction of the labor of a multi-stage. This is often the largest single line item on an exterior job.
Add-on services. Engine bay, headlight restoration, ozone treatment, wheel coating.
Products used. Professional-grade chemicals cost meaningfully more than consumer products, and it shows in results.
Not every low price is a problem. Some are, and the savings usually come from one of these places.
Skipped decontamination. Chemical and mechanical decon takes time. Skipping it means the car looks clean but bonded contamination is still there, and any protection applied on top will not last.
No extraction, just shampoo. This is the one that causes actual harm. Cleaning upholstery without pulling the moisture back out is the leading cause of mold in vehicle interiors, particularly in this humidity.
Filler products instead of correction. Glazes hide swirl marks temporarily. The car looks corrected, and three washes later the swirls are back.
Consumer products at professional prices. Harder to detect, but it shows up in how long the results last.
Rushing the paint. Aggressive polishing done fast can burn through clear coat. That damage requires refinishing to fix, which costs far more than the job saved.
Before booking anywhere, these separate serious operations from the rest.
The answers matter less than whether they can answer at all. Anyone doing this seriously will have specific responses.
The strongest argument for detailing is not appearance, it is avoided cost.
Paint that oxidizes has to be corrected or refinished. Leather that dries and cracks has to be replaced. Interiors that develop mold require remediation. Wheels that corrode from embedded iron get replaced. Every one of those is more expensive than the maintenance that prevents it.
Resale is the other half. A well-kept vehicle presents better and holds value better, and condition is the first thing an appraiser or private buyer registers.
Mobile detailing is often assumed to cost more for the convenience. In practice pricing is comparable, because a mobile operation does not carry the overhead of a physical shop.
What mobile actually saves you is time. A shop appointment is not the hours of detailing, it is the drive there, the wait or the ride home, and the drive back. Mobile removes all of it, and for most people that is worth more than any price difference either direction.
Do not start by comparing prices. Start by identifying what you are trying to fix.
If the interior is the problem, an interior-only service is the right call and you do not need paint correction. If the paint looks dull, correction is what you want, and interior work can wait. If you are protecting a new vehicle, decontamination and coating matters more than deep cleaning something already clean.
Matching the service to the actual problem saves more money than shopping quotes does.
Any shop quoting a firm price sight unseen is guessing. Condition drives labor, and labor drives the number.
The right question is not what detailing costs. It is what you are trying to accomplish, and what it takes to get there on your specific vehicle.
