Musty means moisture

That specific smell — damp, earthy, a little like a basement — is microbial. Mold and mildew produce compounds as they grow, and those compounds are what you are smelling. They only grow where there is moisture.

So the smell is not telling you the car is dirty. It is telling you something in the car is wet and has been wet long enough for growth to start.

Where the moisture comes from

Improper cleaning. This is the most common cause we see, and it is frustrating because the owner was trying to do the right thing. Someone shampooed the carpet or the seats, put a lot of water into the material, and never pulled it back out. The surface dried within a day. The padding underneath did not. Carpet padding and seat foam hold water for weeks in the right conditions, and in a sealed cabin those conditions are close to ideal.

This is the difference between cleaning and extraction. Extraction uses a machine that injects solution and immediately pulls it back out under vacuum. Without that recovery step, you have essentially watered your carpet.

Leaks. Windshield seals, sunroof drains, and door membranes all fail over time. A clogged sunroof drain is a particularly common culprit because the water does not appear where you would look for it — it runs down the A-pillar and soaks the carpet under the front seats, out of sight.

Spills that were wiped, not extracted. A drink spilled into a seat goes deeper than the surface. Wiping handles what you can see and leaves the rest in the foam.

Wet items left in the car. Gym bags, towels, umbrellas, dog beds. A wet towel on carpet for two days in July is enough to start the process.

Why this is worse in Chattanooga

Humidity here sits between 75 and 80 percent year round. In a drier climate, a damp carpet has a real chance to dry out on its own once the source is removed. Here, the ambient air holds so much moisture that drying happens slowly if at all.

Add summer heat and a closed car becomes warm, dark, and damp — which is a fair description of ideal growing conditions.

Why air fresheners make it worse

An air freshener adds scent on top of the odor. It does not remove anything. For a week the car smells like the freshener and the mustiness underneath, then the freshener fades and you are back where you started.

Meanwhile the source is still growing. Odor is a symptom, and covering a symptom while the cause continues is how a minor problem becomes a significant one.

The health angle

The CDC associates mold exposure with respiratory symptoms, asthma flares, and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. A car is a small enclosed space with recirculating air, and most people spend meaningful time in one every day.

This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to treat a persistent musty smell as something to resolve rather than tolerate.

What actually fixes it

Find the source. Check under the floor mats and press the carpet with your hand in the footwells. Check the spare tire well, which collects water from trunk seal leaks and gets ignored for years. If any area is damp, that is your answer, and if it is a leak, the leak has to be repaired first or the problem returns.

Extract, do not just clean. Hot water extraction pulls moisture and contamination out of the material rather than pushing it deeper. This is the step that distinguishes professional interior work from a shampoo.

Dry completely. Air movers and controlled airflow, not just an open window. In this humidity, passive drying often is not enough.

Treat the surfaces. Once dry, an antimicrobial treatment addresses what is left rather than perfuming over it.

Replace the cabin air filter. A filter that has been sitting damp is its own odor source, and it is pushing air through whatever is growing on it every time the fan runs.

How to keep it from coming back

Do not leave wet items in the car. Run the air conditioning on fresh air for a few minutes before shutting down after heavy use, which helps dry the evaporator. Address spills the same day. Have the interior professionally detailed every three to four months in this climate, and monthly if pets ride regularly.

Most importantly, if you have interior cleaning done, make sure whoever does it extracts the moisture. Cleaning without extraction is the leading cause of the exact problem it was meant to solve.
